In surveying the Kansas Republican political landscape after the dismal Novemeber election results, one thing is certain- the 2008 elections could turn out to be an even bigger embarrassment to the party.
Take Pat Roberts and his re-election, for example. Here is a guy I have always admired, voted for and even supported financially. When he was appointed to the Intelligence Committee, I was excited to have his voice of reason amongst his fellow GOP war hawks and demagogues. In today's world state-of-affairs and the constant threat of terrorism and homeland insecurity, here's a guy who could make a difference- and he's my Senator.
Well, guess I was wrong.
After hearing last week that Roberts would no longer serve on the intel committee, I was curious why. Then I found a couple of articles that begin to paint a picture:
-Roberts doesn't think being on the single most important committee in today's global climate is a benefit to Kansans (click for the links.)
-Roberts criticized for cozying-up to liberal Democrat Jay Rockefeller
But the one that put it into perspective the best was this site:

With the Kansas (and national) Democrat machine enjoying their spoils after the November Massacre, Sen. Pat Roberts must already be very, very concerned he cannot win re-election in 2008. He must think the only way he has a chance at victory in 08 is to cut and run and not be held accountable for his numerous failings as intelligence chair. He and his handlers must think out-of-sight, out-of-mind will make it all better.
Unfortunately for him, I think Kansans have a better memory than he thinks.

Pat Roberts as Intelligence Chair:
The wrong person, at the wrong place, at the wrong
time.
Go away, Pat. You abandoned our state long ago. Watching Sebelius beat you by 12 in 2008 will be fun to watch.
Who are you people? Roberts left Intelligence because his co-chair Rockefeller was a complete jerk, and the D's on the committee were world class a**holes. Nothing could get done.
He's going to Senate Finance, the most powerful committee on the hill. You know, the place where tax policy is set.
Robert would beat Sebelius worse than she beat Barnett. No contest.
Nice try, this is the worst attempt at being a "moderate" Republican website. Honestly, Democrats you have a lot to learn about how this works.
Pat Roberts is going to have a tough reelection. Mark Parkinson can beat him ... if Mark decides to run.
I agree with post number 2. From what my D.C. friends tell me, Roberts is safe for the 2008 election. Sebelius isn't going to run against him and no other Kansas Demorcrat has the amount of money he does.
Roberts wins easy- again. Save your money and give it to the guy or gal who runs against Nancy Boyda. THAT is where the real race will be.
No matter what this or any other blog says, Roberts is a shoo-in for re-election.
But one thing post number 2 says that is wrong- you can't blame the Rockefeller for being a jerk- what does that say about Roberts- doesn't play well with others? That's a little childish, don't you think?
Pat Roberts did abandon the Kansas Republican party a long time ago. He only cares about himself and getting the award as the most humorous Senator.
